Phantom of The Opera closes on Broadway
April 2023
The Phantom of the Opera performed it’s final show on Sunday April 16 at the Majestic Theatre in New York. Broadway’s longest running show - this was show number 13,981 - closed to a rapturous standing ovation with gold and silver confetti raining down and ending with a reprise of “The Music of the Night” performed by the current cast as well as notable previous cast members including the original Christine, Sarah Brightman.
Andrew Lloyd Webber, the iconic show’s composer and co-producer with Cameron Mackintosh, spoke at the conclusion of the show paying tribute to its phenomenal success over the past 35 years and the incredible cast and crew who have helped to create one of the most successful shows of all time.
There was a video presentation of many of the actors who had played key roles in the show over the record-breaking years, and many were present inside the Majestic Theatre. Heartfelt tribute was made to members of the original creative team who are sadly no longer with us and are hugely missed – Hal Prince, Gillian Lynne and Maria Bjornsen.
Peter Land, representing both his wife and the Foundation that bears their name, was there to mark the closing of a show that had begun in London in 1986 – where it continues to run today - before opening on Broadway in 1988.
Peter, a previous performer in the London production of Phantom, can be seen here on the night in the Majestic Theatre with Sierra Boggess, who had performed the role of Christine both on Broadway and in London’s West End.
The multi Tony and Olivier Award winning show continues to be performed worldwide, including productions in Japan, China, South Korea and Europe.
